MAYOR'S REPORT
November 3, 2016

Work Session to Establish By-Laws Committee: Commissioner Ron Lane has suggested that the Town Board schedule a Work Session in order to establish a By-Laws Committee and to discuss specific items we would like to see the by-laws include. I would recommend that we schedule a Work Session during the month of November to address this issue.

Previous Work Session to Discuss 401K Package: A Work Session was held on October 21, 2016, to meet with Mrs. Diane Swindell, Regional Retirement Manager for the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the Work Session was to allow educate board members and employees with regards to the 401K retirement package, which the state offers to all state employees, as a supplement to their retirement income.

As a result of this meeting, all employees in the Town of Woodland will be allowed to participate in the 401K Supplemental Retirement Program. Prior to this meeting, only sworn law enforcement officers who were employed by the Town of Woodland were allowed to participate in this program. This is a great addition to the retirement package offered to all of our town's employees.

Maintenance Position: The Town of Woodland has been advertising to fill a position within our Public Works Department. The deadline for receiving applications is Friday, November 4, 2016, at 5:00 pm. We have received numerous applications as of this date. The Town Board will soon commence the interview process for perspective candidates.

Playground Equipment: A couple of weeks ago, I was notified by Ms. Kimberly Turner, the County Manager for Northampton County, that the County Board of Commissioners recently passed a resolution to donate the playground equipment currently located at the Wellness Center in Jackson to the Town of Woodland.

A few days ago, I received a telephone call from Mr. James Roberts, Recreation Director for Northampton County. According to Mr. Roberts, the contractor is scheduled to start dismantling the old playground equipment next week. He suggested that our Public Works crew come to the site before the dismantling process, in order to take some pictures and measurements of the equipment. Once the equipment is dismantled, the town's Public Works Department will pick up all of the materials and transport them to Woodland, where they will be reassembled at a later date.

I have discussed this matter with Robbie Collier, the town's Public Works Director. I believe that the playground equipment will prove to be a great asset to our recreation field.

Woodland Community Outreach, Incorporated: This is a newly formed community service organization which has the primary mission of bringing unity throughout our community by reaching out to our fellow citizens through special events, beautification of our public spaces, providing recreational programs and other activities throughout our town, in an effort to enhance the lives of present and future generations.

The cost for a one year membership is $5.00. Woodland Community Outreach is the umbrella organization of the Woodland Special Events Committee, the Woodland Recreation Committee and the Woodland Fundraising and Grants Committee.
